2018, the Memphis style is back
Why talk about the Memphis current 30 years later ? Because it has never been so topical. It seems that today, creators of all stripes (fashion as a decoration) are fond of offering themselves a fantasy bubble in an increasingly serious world where the wisdom of the Scandinavian style is beginning to annoy some. The wave of Memphis style sweeps again to awaken the atmosphere in trendy shops as well as in home decor magazines or fashion podiums. Examples ? In the capital, for some years now, the trendy places have clearly stitched some major details of the Memphis style. The chic Grocery House Plisson or the ready-to-wear shop, Kitsuné Paris, have chosen the terrazzo for their walls. This coating composed of natural stone blends, colored marble and cement, all polished, was highly appreciated by the Memphis movement for its organic and colorful side. It is again this spotted effect, imperfect, raw and authentic that seduces the trendy shops. Nowadays terrazzo is no longer satisfied with the role of coating, it brings a zest of raw elegance to furniture and objects. Other recent boutiques such as Louvreuse, a new brand of leather goods made in France, or Amélie Pichard's first boutique in Paris, were inspired by a few codes of the famous style: do not have any, cherish the fun decorative keys capable of transcend the bad taste. Pure deco side, everyone goes from his homage to this clan that marked the end of the last century by offering an anti-conformist bubble to the world of design. The codes are there: the confusing graphic forms thrown here and there on wallpapers or bed linen, armchairs and coffee tables that play thoroughly the map of the unstructured without forgetting the dishes surrealist forms. Some will only see a soulless copy of a style that looks for one at any cost. For the skeptics, it will always remain, the mark Memphis Milano which proposes on its site all the creations of the movement. Crisis of nostalgia ephemeral or simple envy of fantasy and peps in our interior, only the future will tell us if this return to the Memphis style will be short again ... or not !
